AFRICA WEST A GREAT SUCCEES

For the 4,000 people that attended Africa West 2010, the event proved both fun and informative. "We are very pleased that we were able to give the attendee another festival that they enjoyed and were glad they attended," stated Chair Tania Mitchell.

The Friday night Africa West traditional African opening ceremony set the tone for the Festival. As local African drummer Jahruba honored the motherland and the ancestors that have come before us, shaping what we celebrate today, the African American Imprint.

This was followed on Friday with the premier of the play by Sly Production, “Saggin.” Young people in the community wrote and starred in the play about the youth pants hanging down fashion statement called "Saggin."

This set the stage for Saturday which included a day full of activities that include a parade, 5K run, arts and craft vendors and great food. The other highlights included the Soul Food competition, where cooks competed for over $5,000 in cash prizes. The play, "The Way it Was," chronicling the African American history in Oklahoma was also a major hit. Young children enjoyed the Kids Plaza Area where they made crafts, played games and enjoyed the inflatables.

The R & B evening concert was the most popular as festival goers danced and sang with the groups that included the popular band Shortt Dogg, Dallas based Comfort Folk and the SOUL Band.

"We wanted to provide a program that was educational, but jammed with a lot of fun," said Gary Jones who coordinated the event.

Buy For Le$$ Opens at NE 23rd and MLK

(Formerly the Hometown Grocery Store)

BUY FOR LE$$ Grocery Stores has added their thirteenth store to the growing, locally owned chain. Wednesday, June 16th the formerly named Hometown Market will become BUY FOR LE$$.

"We are very excited to add this location to our BUY FOR LE$$ group of stores," said owner Hank Binkowski. "The selection of grocery items will expand as well as the selection of fresh meats and produce." "Also, more customer services-among them Western Union and Direct Bill Pay-- will be added," he said.

He also noted that the BUY FOR LE$$ mission is, and always will be, to endlessly search for the best deals, the freshest perishables, and the highest quality items on all of the products customers buy and use every day. He also said the BUY FOR LE$$ goal as they continue to expand, is to merchandise the selection at each individual store to better serve the surrounding neighborhood. He noted the mission corresponds with their motto-Get More! BUY FOR LE$$ also has an extensive website offering recipes, coupons, wellness information, and a weekly advertisement.

Mr. Binkowski opened his first BUY FOR LE$$ store at Penn and Hefner Road in 1988. The chain also has several stores that offer numerous products to serve the growing Hispanic community in Oklahoma City. In late 2008 BUY FOR LE$$ purchased the former Grider's store at SW 29th and May Avenue.
The newest store, which also has a pharmacy, is located at 2001 NE 23rd at MLK Boulevard and will be open from 6:00am to Midnight.

Capitol Chamber will Host Radio Show Promoting Economic Development in NE Oklahoma City Airs Every Saturday at 3 PM on KRMP 1140 AM

"What's Going On?," Oklahoma City, that is the concept behind the Capitol Chamber sponsored radio show at 3 PM on KRMP 1140 AM.

The show called Eastside Inside, taking the name from the Capitol Chamber's electronic newsletter is a pre-recorded show that will air every Saturday at 3 PM. The show is dedicated to helping inform the listening audience about "What's going on" in Northeast Oklahoma City.

The Capitol Chamber decided to sponsor Eastside Inside after listening to the concerns of members, local business and the residents of NE Okla. City that they would like to know more about what is going on in the community and especially in the area of economic development.

Each week Eastside Inside will highlight what's going on at the Capitol Chamber, followed by a featured business of the week. The show will go to a guest who will provide information about a service, activity or event that the Chamber thinks is important information for the community to know. The show will then conclude with a calendar segment of upcoming events segments.

The Chamber is excited about the program and hopes to use it as one more tool to help in the Chambers effort to help increase economic development in NE Oklahoma City.

Join us every Saturday at 3 PM on KRMP 1140!!!!
