July Luncheon Information Packed

 

Oklahoma City Schools Superintendent John PorterAttendees at the Capitol Chamber July luncheon received an assortment of great information highlighted by a speech from new Oklahoma City Public Schools Superintendent John Q. Porter. Anyone who attended the luncheon could not come away without receiving important information about what was going on in the Northeast OKC community,” stated Capitol Chamber Chairman John Hasley.

Superintendent Porter did not disappoint, as attendees listened intensely as he outlined his philosophy and priorities for the school district. Porter got the crowd involved as he talked about the need for system-wide standards that he will be working to implement. That those who did not get it done, “Had to go,” stated Porter.

Mr. Porter received enthusiastic applause when he stated, “We must stop killing our children’s dreams.” He concluded the speech with a call for those in attendance to support the upcoming changes.

The attendees also received a presentation from Metro Tech outlying the preliminary steps currently underway to implement a business incubator project. Dr. James Branscum and his staff provided a presentation detailing the different concepts currently being considered.

The Capitol Chamber and Metro Tech presented a special award to State Representative Mike Shelton recognizing his efforts to help get the funding necessary to help get the incubator project off the ground.

Wayland Cubit with the Oklahoma City Police Department informed the group of a new outreach program that the department is currently developing to respond to gang violence. The program is a faith-based initiative that will bring together the department, social service agencies and the faith-based community to intervene in the lives of young kids who are on the verge of gang involvement or in trouble.
